A scan of your shoulder and upper arm assesses the joint and surrounding soft tissues to help identify the cause of pain, weakness or restricted movement.
This is a diagnostic ultrasound scan that uses high frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the shoulder region. It allows assessment of the shoulder joint, rotator cuff tendons, upper arm muscles, ligaments, bursae and surrounding soft tissues. It is particularly useful for identifying tendon injuries, inflammation, impingement and fluid build-up.
An ultrasound of your shoulder and upper arm may be useful for you if
- Shoulder pain (persistent or worsening)
- Difficulty lifting your arm or reduced range of movement
- Suspected rotator cuff injury or tear
- Pain when reaching overhead or behind your back
- Weakness in the shoulder or upper arm
- Symptoms of impingement (pain when moving the arm)
- Swelling or inflammation around the shoulder joint
- Pain following strain, injury or repetitive use
We recommend if you have any concerning symptom, you should discuss this with your GP first.
For people over 16 years of age.
