Knee Scan

No preparation is required.

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the knee (shorts are ideal, or trousers that can be rolled up above the knee).

Ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and the probe is moved around the knee to capture images. The Sonographer may ask you to slightly bend or straighten your leg to help assess the tendons, ligaments and joint space more clearly.

A Knee Scan can help assess a range of conditions including:

• Joint effusion (fluid in the knee)
• Bursitis
• Tendinosis / tendon inflammation
• Ligament injuries or tears (where visible)
• Meniscal cysts or degenerative changes
• Posterior knee cysts (such as Baker’s cyst)
• Degenerative changes such as arthritis
• Soft tissue inflammation around the knee

Ultrasound may identify meniscal cysts or degenerative changes, but the menisci are often better assessed with MRI if a tear is suspected. If appropriate, this will be noted in your report as a recommended next step.

No — ultrasound is a safe and generally painless procedure.

If the area is already sore, you may feel mild pressure as the probe passes over the tender region.

Sometimes comparing both knees helps the Sonographer confirm whether a finding is normal for you or related to injury/inflammation. This is not always needed and is done only when appropriate.

You will receive a written diagnostic report with your results and guidance on next steps:

• No Further Action, or
• Medical Follow-Up Recommended
