This scan is available for people from 16 years of age.
A Knee Scan assesses the structures within and around your knee to help investigate pain, swelling or suspected injury.
This diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the knee joint and surrounding tissues. The scan can assess the knee joint, tendons, supporting muscles, medial and lateral collateral ligaments, bursae, the posterior knee region, and may also evaluate the menisci and related soft tissue changes where visible.
An ultrasound of your knee may be useful for you if:
- Knee pain (new, ongoing or worsening)
- Swelling of the knee or around the kneecap
- Suspected ligament or tendon injury
- Pain following sport, twisting or strain
- A feeling of tightness or fluid in the knee
- Symptoms suggesting bursitis
- Pain or swelling at the back of the knee (possible cyst)
- Reduced movement, stiffness or discomfort when walking
Please note: for accuracy, your Sonographer may occasionally assess the other knee for comparison. This is at the Sonographer’s discretion and is not always required.
