A scan of your hip and upper thigh assesses the hip joint and surrounding soft tissues to help determine the cause of pain, discomfort or restricted movement.

This is a diagnostic ultrasound scan using high frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the hip region. It allows assessment of the hip joint and nearby structures including adductor tendons, muscles, ligaments, the iliopsoas tendon and bursa, and the trochanteric bursa. It is particularly useful for identifying soft tissue inflammation, tendon changes and fluid build-up.

An ultrasound of your hip and upper thigh may be useful for you if

Persistent hip or groin pain
Pain in the upper thigh, inner thigh or outer hip
Suspected muscle strain or tendon injury
Swelling or tenderness around the hip
Pain that worsens with walking, running or activity
Reduced mobility, stiffness or discomfort with movement
Symptoms suggesting bursitis (such as trochanteric pain)

Your Sonographer will apply ultrasound gel to the skin and move the probe over the hip and upper thigh region to obtain clear images. You may be asked to slightly change position or move your leg to help assess the tendons and soft tissues more accurately.

This scan can help identify or assess:

Trochanteric bursitis
Iliopsoas bursitis / iliopsoas tendon inflammation
Tendinosis or tendon tears (including adductor tendons)
Soft tissue inflammation
Hip joint effusions (fluid)
Degenerative change such as arthritis
Muscle strains or soft tissue injury

Ultrasound can sometimes identify indirect signs around the hip, such as fluid or inflammation, but labral tears are often better assessed with MRI. If a labral injury is suspected, your report may recommend medical follow-up for further imaging.
