A scan of your elbow and forearm will assess the joint, tendons, muscles and surrounding soft tissues to investigate pain, swelling or injury.
This is a diagnostic ultrasound scan which uses high frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the structures around the elbow and forearm. It can assess the elbow joint, flexor and extensor tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae and associated soft tissues. This scan may help identify inflammation, tendon changes, fluid build-up or soft tissue abnormalities.
An ultrasound of your elbow and forearm may be useful for you if
- Elbow pain (including ongoing or recurring pain)
- Pain on the outer elbow (possible tennis elbow)
- Pain on the inner elbow (possible golfer’s elbow)
- Swelling around the elbow joint
- Suspected tendon or ligament injury
- Pain following strain, repetitive movement or sport
- Reduced movement or stiffness in the elbow
- Tenderness or swelling over the tip of the elbow (possible bursitis)
